Athletic career

Schmolke, who came from Upper Bavaria, moved from SV Marzling to SpVgg Fürth in 1954 . At the beginning of the decade, the club was still playing for the German championship title as a participant in the finals, but the club has now slipped into the relegation battle. Schmolke was only used irregularly, his 20 league games in the 1955/56 season represent a personal best. In 1960 he moved after 66 league games within the championship to league competitor TSG Ulm 1846, who had only managed to stay in the league in the 1959/60 season because of the better goal quotient compared to Viktoria Aschaffenburg with the same points . There he was a regular player with 28 league appearances, but the team missed relegation one point behind promoted Waldhof Mannheim and 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 . In the second division season 1961/62 he managed to get promoted again with the club as second in the table of the II. Division South behind KSV Hessen Kassel . He then left the club with an unknown destination.
