Balsas , officially Portuguese Município de Balsas , is a Brazilian municipality in the south of the state of Maranhão . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 94,887 inhabitants, who live in a large community area of around 13,141.8 km² and are called Balsenser ( balsenses ). Mathematically, this results in a population density of 6.4 people per km². It is located on the Rio Balsas , which is navigable from here.
The distance to the capital São Luís is 810 km. It belongs to the geographic-geostatistical Greater Region MATOPIBA , which is made up of parts of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins , Piauí and Bahia , which belong to the Região Nordeste . The municipality is solely responsible for an area of comparatively 90% of Schleswig-Holstein.
It is the seat of the Balsas diocese and the location of the Centro de Estudos Superiores de Balsas (CESBA) of the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão (UEMA), the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA) maintains a campus in Balsas.

Surrounding communities are Riachão , São Raimundo das Mangabeiras , Fortaleza dos Nogueiras , Tasso Fragoso , Alto Parnaíba , Nova Colinas , Sambaíba and Carolina . The biome is predominantly cerrado .
The community has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 26.4 ° C. The average rainfall is 1190 mm per year. The southern summer has significantly more rainfall than the southern winter.
Average income and standard of living
The monthly average income in 2017 was 2.0 times the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00 (converted for 2019: around € 390). The Human Development Index (HDI) is rated medium at 0.687 for 2010. In 2017, 18,290 people or 19.3% of the population were registered as employed, 40% of the population had an income of half the minimum wage. In October 2019, 8,402 families or around 30% of the families classified as poor by the IBGE received support through the Bolsa Família program .
