The diocese of Balsas ( Latin Dioecesis Balsensis , Portuguese Diocese de Balsas ) is in Brazil located Roman Catholic diocese based in Balsas in the state of Maranhão .

history

Pope Pius XII founded the territorial prelature of Santo Antônio de Balsas on December 20, 1954 with the Apostolic Constitution Quo modo sollemne from territory of the diocese of Caxias do Maranhão and it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão as a suffragan diocese.

In 1967 it was expanded to include five parishes. With the Bull Institutionis propositum she was raised to the diocese on October 3, 1981.
