The diocese Coroatá was on August 26, 1977 by Pope Paul VI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Qui benevolentissimi Dei from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão and subordinated to this as a suffragan . First Bishop was Reinhard Pünder .
