Sebastião Bandeira Coêlho

Sebastião Bandeira Coêlho , also Dom Sebastião , (born January 31, 1959 in Riachão , Maranhão ) is a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Coroatá .

Life

Sebastião Bandeira Coêlho entered the seminary in 1974 and studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Institute for Religious Studies in Fortaleza in north-eastern Brazil. He was ordained a priest in 1984 . From 1997 to 1998 he completed a master's degree in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome .

He was first head of the St. Joseph Training Center in São Raimundo das Mangabeiras and later held various positions in the diocesan curia. He was vicar general of the Balsas diocese and from 1999 to 2004 rector of the seminary of Archbishop Oscar Romero (Seminário Maior Dom Oscar Romero). From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the Northern Region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil, CNBB). Since 1999 he has been professor and coordinator of the theology course at the Instituto de Estudos Superiores do Maranhão (IESMA) .

In 2004 he was appointed titular bishop of Thubursicum by Pope John Paul II and appointed auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Manaus . He was ordained episcopal on March 12, 2005 by the Bishop of Balsas, Gianfranco Masserdotti MCCI; Co- consecrators were Luiz Soares Vieira , Bishop of Macapá , and Paulo Eduardo Andrade Ponte , Archbishop of São Luís do Maranhão . His motto is community and hope (Comunhão e Esperança).

On January 6, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. the appointment as coadjutor bishop of Coroatá. The sick office holder Reinhard Pünder introduced him to his office on April 10, 2010. With the death of Reinhard Pünders on January 16, 2011 he succeeded him as Bishop of Coroatá.
