Axixá , officially Portuguese Município de Axixá , is a municipality in the Brazilian state of Maranhão . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 12,130 inhabitants, who live in a community area of ​​around 159.5 km² and are called Axixaens ( axixaenses ). The distance to the capital São Luís is 100 km, it belongs to the metropolitan region of São Luís . It is 159th of the 217 municipalities of the state, which belongs to the geostatistical greater region Região Nordeste .

Toponym

The place is named after one of the indigenous names of a tree species from the sterculia or stink tree family ( Sterculia chicha ) found in northeastern Brazil .
