São José de Ribamar , officially Portuguese Município de São José de Ribamar , is a Brazilian coastal city in the state of Maranhão . The population in the 2010 census was 163,045. The population of the third most populous city in the state was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 177,687 inhabitants, who live in a community area of around 180.2 km². It is 32 km from São Luís , the capital of Maranhão. It is part of the São Luís metropolitan region with eight other municipalities .
history
The place is named after the patron saint of the state Joseph of Nazareth , in Portuguese São José, with the addition Ribamar. The present-day territory was traditional settlement area of the indigenous Potiguaras . The Gamelas (Gamellas), who were later expelled to the mainland, had a forest village on the island, and the area was assigned to the Jesuits. The governor of the then Maranhão, Francisco Coelho de Carvalho , had distributed some lands on December 16, 1627, which is considered to be the founding year.
São José de Ribamar received city rights as a Munizip through the Lei Estadual n.º 758 of September 24, 1952, it was called Ribamar at the time and was a district of São Luís. The community received its current name on September 16, 1969 through the Lei Estadual n.º 2980.
geography
The municipality is located on the island of Upaon-Açu in the south on the Baía de São José bay , and, because it runs across the island, in the north on the Baía de São Marcos , each with direct access to the South Atlantic .
Surrounding communities are São Luís, Paço do Lumiar and Raposa .
climate
The community has a tropical climate, Aw according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification . The average temperature is 27.1 ° C. The average rainfall is 1788 mm per year. In the southern summer, São José de Ribamar has significantly more rainfall than in the southern winter.
Local government
The executive rests with the city prefect (mayor). In the local elections in 2016 , Luis Fernando Moura da Silva of the PSDB was elected city prefect, but the former candidate for vice mayor José Eudes Sampaio Nunes of the Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) has taken over the office until 2020.
The legislature rests with a 17-member elected city council, the vereadores of the Câmara Municipal.

In 2017, the monthly average income was 2.0 times the Brazilian minimum wage ( Salário mínimo ) of R $ 880.00 (income converted for 2019: around € 398 per month). The Human Development Index (HDI) is rated high at 0.708 for 2010. In 2017, 18,149 people or 10.3% of the population were registered as permanently employed; 42.3% of the population had an income of half the minimum wage in 2010. 23,435 families received support from the Bolsa Família social program in October 2019 (previous year November 2018: 24,827 families).

Illiteracy rate
São José de Ribamar had an illiteracy rate of 26.5% in 1991 (including early school leavers), which had already fallen to 8.9% in the 2010 census. Around 27.5% of the population in 2010 were children and adolescents up to the age of 15.
