The St. Pius Church is a Catholic church in Herne. It is located in Herne-Pöppinghausen and is today the parish church of the St. Dionysius parish of the Emschertal dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

Building history

The sparsely populated area in Pöppinghausen, like the other areas of the Ruhr area, experienced rapid population growth in the last third of the 19th century due to the northward-moving mining industry. As a result, the mother churches were forced to create parish vicarages in order to enable people to actively participate in worship and parish life. The Lambertuskirche in Castrop parish in 1900 from the St. Joseph parish . In 1958 the first Catholic church service was celebrated in Pantringshof.

1970–1972 construction of the church, 1972 inauguration of the community center.

Furnishing

Inside, the church is kept dark due to the windows and the wooden paneled ceiling. The main idea of the interior is: The people of God on the way . The structure and its ceiling design therefore refer to a tent. The three-tiered altar island, which is illuminated by an asymmetrically arranged vertical ribbon of windows and three skylights, catches the eye with clever lighting. The glass windows were created by Jupp Gesing from Herne.

The Nikolaus chapel was furnished by the Menden artist Ulrich Langohr .

organ

The 22 register organ comes from the former Melanchthon Hall at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf. The Pius congregation in Herne bought the instrument and commissioned the organ builder Werner Gibisch to implement it and prepare it for their church. The organ has been in the church since December 2007 and was set up by organ builder Johannes Klein.
