The St. Barbara Church is a Catholic church in Herne. It is located in Herne-Horsthausen-Elpeshof . Today it is the parish church of the St. Dionysius parish of the Emschertal dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

Building history

The sparsely populated area in Horsthausen, like the other areas of the Ruhr area, experienced rapid population growth due to the northward-moving mining in the last third of the 19th century. As a result, the mother churches were forced to create parish vicarages in order to enable people to actively participate in worship and parish life. The Lambertuskirche in Castrop parish in 1900 from the St. Joseph parish . In the period after the Second World War , the community again grew by leaps and bounds to 8,000 souls. Refugees and displaced persons from the former German eastern areas as well as workers from the rest of Germany looked for and found work in the coal and steel industries. New districts such as Pantringshof (1952–56) and Elpeshof (1955–60) emerged and with them the Church of St. Barbara .
