Deanery Emschertal

The Roman Catholic dean's office Emschertal in the Archdiocese of Paderborn is located at the western end of the West Koopraum and covers the cities of Herne (with Wanne-Eickel) and the city of Castrop-Rauxel (excluding the Henrichenburg district).

In the north it is surrounded by the diocese of Münster , in the west and south by the diocese of Essen .

The deanery was founded on July 1, 2006 from the three deaneries Castrop-Rauxel , Herne and Wanne-Eickel . The background is a structural reform in the Archdiocese of Paderborn. Since January 1, 2010, it has been divided into four pastoral areas (pastoral rooms), in which 29 parishes were originally structured. Three total parishes consisting of four parishes in the north of Castrop-Rauxel (Corpus Christi), ten parishes in Alt-Herne (St. Dionysius) and nine parishes in Wanne-Eickel (St. Christophorus) have already emerged, 6 parishes from the Pastoral group Castrop-Rauxel Süd will follow. About 85,000 believers belong to the deanery.
Pastor Norbert-Johannes Walter has been the leading dean since May 24, 2016.

The deanery is named after the river Emscher , whose valley lies on the northern edge of the deanery.
