The St. Elisabeth Church is a Catholic parish church in Herne. It is located on the western side of Herne-Mitte on Brunnenstrasse and is the last Catholic church in the city to be built in the 20th century (within the boundaries before 1975). Today it is the parish church of the St. Dionysius parish of the Emschertal dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn.

Building history

Statue of Elisabeth next to the portal

The parish of St. Elisabeth was founded on November 1, 1948, initially as the parish vicarie of St. Boniface and raised to an independent parish on July 1, 1952.

In the years 1951/1952 the parish church was built without the tower built in 1957. The glass windows were created by the artist Jupp Gesing from Herne in 1955 and 1990. In 1977, after a thorough interior renovation, the church got its present appearance. Below the sacred space there is a community center with a gym and a bowling alley.

Bricks and natural stones determine the external appearance of the building, which is classic in its topography.
