St. Barbara Church in Castrop-Rauxel / Ickern

history

The history of the St. Barbara community is closely linked to the development of mining in Ickern, Habinghorst and Rauxel . The growing mines, the increasing population and the emergence of new settlements, especially in the Aapwiesen and in front of it, made it necessary to create another municipality for the Ickern area. In the 1950s the number of members in the St. Antonius congregation in Ickern rose to over 11,000 - making St.Antonius one of the largest congregations in the Archdiocese of Paderborn.

For this reason, the north-western part was parish off and St. Barbara was created with a membership of approx. 3,400 souls in a municipality that is still today in a north-south direction from the Aapwiesen to Römerstrasse and in a west-east direction between Nordstrasse and Waldenburger Strasse extends. The number of parishioners has dropped to around 2,000 souls to this day.

Unfortunately, the exact circumstances of the foundation of the church and the building of the church have never been passed down. Only the following data are known:

  • Groundbreaking ceremony - December 4th, 1956
  • Laying of the foundation stone - December 4th, 1957
  • Foundation of the parish as a parish vicarie - August 30, 1959
  • Consecration by Cardinal Jaeger - April 9, 1960
  • Elevation to an independent parish - July 1, 1960
  • Incorporation into the Castrop-Rauxel-Nord pastoral network - February 1, 2003
  • Dissolution of the Catholic parish of St. Barbara and the pastoral network - December 31, 2014
  • Establishment of the Catholic parish Corpus Christi Castrop-Rauxel - January 1st, 2015

Pastoral Association Castrop-Rauxel Nord

On February 1st, 2003 the four cath. Parishes of St. Barbara and St. Antonius, Ickern, St. Josef, Habinghorst and Herz Jesu, Rauxel incorporated into the Castrop-Rauxel Nord pastoral network. All four communities remained legally independent. Only pastoral care and pastoral care were more closely linked. An example of cooperation is e.g. B. the common procession on the feast of Corpus Christi . In addition, in the pastoral association council and other committees at the deanery and diocese level, the merger to form a common overall parish was prepared in 2015. This process was called “Effata - Open yourself!”.

Catholic Parish Corpus Christi

On January 1, 2015, the four parishes of the Pastoral Association Castrop-Rauxel Nord were abolished and merged into the new parish Corpus Christi. At the same time, the pastoral association Castrop-Rauxel Nord expired. The newly founded parish is the first overall parish in the Emschertal deanery. Like the other three parishes, the parish of St. Barbara became a sub-parish of the entire parish.

While retaining its church title , the “Parish Church of St. Barbara” became one of three “Affiliate Churches of the Parish Corpus Christi”. The only parish church is the St. Joseph Church in Habinghorst.

With the foundation of the parish, there is now only one parish council, one parish council and one local parish committee in each parish, which is supposed to maintain, promote and shape life in the pastoral field.
