Walter Schmid (lawyer)

Walter U. Schmid (born April 11, 1953 in Zurich ) is a Swiss lawyer and social expert .

Schmid studied law at the University of Lausanne and the University of Zurich . In 1979 he was admitted to the bar . After a research stay at Stanford University , he received his doctorate in 1981 in Zurich. From 1982 to 1991 he was Central Secretary of Swiss Refugee Aid . He then headed the Office for Youth and Social Welfare of the City of Zurich until 2000, before working for three years as the Federal Council's project manager for the use of gold reserves and the Solidarity Foundation.

Schmid has been Director of the Lucerne School of Social Work and Head of the Training Department since 2003 . He also holds various mandates. Among other things, he was Vice President of the Federal Commission on Foreigners' Issues (EKA) and Chair of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles. From 1999 to 2014 he was President of the Bern- based Swiss Conference on Social Welfare (SKOS).

Walter Schmid is married, has two grown children and lives in Winterthur .
