Headquarters in Kirchhundem

Mennekes Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG is the world's leading manufacturer of CEE three-phase current plugs . The company is headquartered in Kirchhundem in the southern Sauerland .

history

The Mennekes company was founded in 1935 as an electrician workshop in Aloys Mennekes (1910–1976) 's parents' house in Hofolpe. Shortly before, he had received his master's certificate as an electrician. At first only two apprentices worked alongside him in the company. In 1937 Mennekes rented a shop in Kirchhundem in which he sold various electrical goods. From there he first supplied customers with a motorcycle and later with an Opel P4. After the end of the war, Mennekes first repaired power lines that were destroyed by the effects of the war. In 1945 an electric firelighter was initially produced in the rented shooting hall, as there was also a shortage of matches at the time. The 9.90 Reichsmark expensive mantle , an incandescent spiral that can be connected to a socket, could light cigarettes and strips of paper. The glow run was Mennekes' first patent, and 39 people were soon working for the company.

A short time later, the company began producing plugs for various purposes. In 1947 an own factory building was built on today's factory premises, and in 1948 the entire company moved into the new factory. In the beginning the plugs were made of aluminum, from 1960 the plugs and couplings were also made of plastic. When the company founder Aloys Mennekes died in 1976, the company already had 250 employees. The sons Dieter (* 1940; † 2020) and Walter took over the company as successors and made Mennekes a brand. Walter Mennekes has been the owner and partner of Mennekes Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG since 1992 .

In 2015, the company had 1,100 employees worldwide and generated consolidated group sales of around 130 million euros. The corporate headquarters are still in the Sauerland, with further production branches in Neudorf (Ore Mountains) and Nanjing (China). Mennekes has 16 agencies in Germany, 31 in Europe and 36 outside of Europe and cooperates internationally with other companies. The current managing partners are Walter Mennekes, who is also on the board of the Central Association of Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry, and Christopher Mennekes.

Mennekes has been an international producer of connector systems in the industrial sector for 70 years, especially for three-phase current. In 2009, they became known to a wider public in connection with the charging connector for electric vehicles, which the company had designed according to the specifications of RWE and Daimler. Mennekes already had experience with charging plugs based on the " IEC 60309 " standard (three-phase plug ), which were expanded to include additional signal contacts as "CEEplus" plugs. The new connector type was published by the VDE under the VDE-AR-E 2623-2-2 standard. Two years later it was incorporated into the following version of the international “ IEC 62196 ” standard as “Type 2”. Since the term "Mennekes plug" is ambiguous, press releases on the charging plug always refer to the "Mennekes type 2 plug". The ACEA (Association of European Automobile Manufacturers) recommended the "Type 2" connector as a uniform charging connector, since "Type 1" (originally SAE J1772 ) basically does not allow three-phase charging and "Type 3" has no advantages. The Mennekes charging plug for electric vehicles has been the standard for all of Europe since 2014. Since then, the company has been able to further expand its work in the field of electromobility, including the opening of the Mennekes eMobility Showrooms and Training Center on the EUREF Campus Berlin.
