The Buchholz weather chimney

The Buchholz weather chimney is a listed weather chimney / chimney from the former United Geschwind colliery in the Buchholz-Kämpen district of Witten . It is the last remaining structure of its kind in the Ruhr area .

The weather chimney was built in 1856 and served as a vent stack of the mine , which in the bottom Hammertal from the tonnlägigen shaft Henry using a steam engine coal promoted. From 1865 the mine to belonged mine Blankenburg whose seigerer main shaft was also in Hammertal.

The weather chimney was connected to the colliery's boiler house by a 60-meter-long smoke duct. The smoke and hot gases that escaped when the steam engine was in operation escaped through the weather chimney. The suction of the flue gases brought the fresh air required for combustion through the Henry shaft , which in turn flowed into the mine through the main shaft and other weather shafts and thus also supplied the miners in the mine with breathing air.

When the weather chimney was no longer sufficient around 1890 , fans driven by steam turbines were installed. In 1891 the old ventilation system with the weather chimney was shut down, and the Blankenburg colliery followed in 1925.
