The Small Flamingo Flower ( Anthurium scherzerianum ) is a plant of the genus Flamingo Flower in the family of Araceae (Araceae). She comes from tropical America .

description

Anthurium scherzerianum is an evergreen, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 50 cm. It grows epiphytically or terrestrially. There are numerous, thick roots. The basal, 15 to 30 cm long leaves are clearly divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The petiole is 4 to 20 cm long. The simple, dark green, lanceolate leaf blade has a smooth leaf edge, is 5 to 26 cm long and 1.5 to 6.5 cm wide.

The inflorescence is structured like most Araceae: in this species there is a bright red spathe (single bract) that is 4 to 12 cm long and 2.4 to 6 cm wide and an orange-red, twisted flower bulb ( spadix ), the 14 to 52 cm long and about 2 mm in diameter. The pollen is white.

Orange to red berries are produced.

This information applies to the wild form, cultivars can differ more or less strongly.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30, less often 14.

ingredients

Like other arum plants, flamingo flowers contain the toxins aroin (from the group of saponins ) and calcium oxalate .

use

Cultivars of this type are common as houseplant . There are also cultivated forms with spathe of a different color (for example white).

distribution

The home of Anthurium scherzerianum located in Costa Rica (and the first copy was in Guatemala found).
