The Triple Z start-up and business center is located in Essen-Katernberg on the site of the former pit 4/5/11 of the Zeche Zollverein . After the Triple Z was founded in 1996, the buildings of the colliery were renovated. Today more than 90 entrepreneurs with around 600 employees work in the offices and production halls. The operating company of the center is the “ZukunftsZentrumZollverein Aktiengesellschaft für Förder von Buergrendungen” (Triple Z AG for short).

location

The Triple Z is located in the northeast of the city of Essen (Katernberg district) at Katernberger Straße 107. The start-up and business center extends over an area of around 26,000 m² and a small part is also located in Gelsenkirchen's urban area . On June 14, 2015, the nearby tram stop was renamed from Nienhuser Busch to Triple Z.

history

Collieries and the "Essen Consensus"

The Katernberg district suffered particularly from the economic structural change in the Ruhr area in the 80s and 90s. The colliery and coking plant death cost more than 10,000 jobs there alone and led to considerable social problems. On the site of the Zeche Zollverein , mining left large-scale industrial wastelands. In order to create concepts for reducing unemployment, the “Essen Consensus” alliance was established in the early 1990s. In 1995, the informal network of leaders from politics, business and administration developed the idea for a center to support business start-ups in order to fight unemployment. The vacant buildings of the former 4/5/11 mine were chosen as the location.

Foundation of Triple Z AG

In 1996 the city of Essen bought the site of the former mine . Triple Z AG (public limited company for the promotion of business start-ups) was founded in November as the operating company of the center. The founding shareholders were Bfz - Berufsförderungszentrum Essen eV (today Bfz-Essen GmbH), Stadtwerke Essen AG, ETEC GmbH (Essen Technology and Development Center), EWG – Essener Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH and s'Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH of Sparkasse Essen . They subscribed to the founding capital of the stock corporation, at the time of DM 120,000.

Refurbishment of the colliery building

103 years after coal mining began at shaft 4/5/11 of the Zollverein colliery, Triple Z management moved into the building in 1996. This made the Triple Z the third user of the system. Before that, after the colliery was finally closed, the Ruhrkohle AG training workshop was housed there. When Triple Z management moved in, the ten buildings were in dire need of renovation. They were cut off from all supply lines, rain penetrated through roofs and windows, and individual buildings were damaged by vandalism.

As a project in a district in particular need of renovation , the Triple Z received funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the EU in the amount of around 10 million euros. The start-up and company center was renovated in four construction phases. Work began on the administration building of the colliery, today's Building 1: By 1998, smaller and larger offices were built there on 2000 m². The former wages hall of the colliery, where the miners received their salaries, has been extensively renovated. Today there is a bistro there. Construction phases two and three were completed in 1999 and 2002; the rentable office and commercial space increased by around 8,000 m². With the completion of the last construction phase, the renovation of the test stand building, another 23 office rooms were created on an area of 1000 m². During the time of the mine, components in the test stand building were tested for stability before they were used underground.

Establishment of companies

In March 1997 the first entrepreneur moved into the center. Further lettings followed as soon as rental units were completed. A total of 14 companies moved into the Triple Z after the completion of the first construction phase. A year later, these companies offered around 40 jobs. By the end of 2005 the occupancy rate had risen to 94%. Today, an average of 99% of the offices and production areas are rented.

aims

Business promotion

The aim of Triple Z is to promote start-ups in order to encourage the creation of jobs. The statutes say: "The object of the company is to promote the economic structure of the Essen-Katernberg district, which has been particularly hard hit by the decline in mining, by supporting small businesses, especially start-ups." be supported in marketing their products and services. Triple Z offers advice before starting a business. Another objective set out in the statutes is urban district development. Essen-Katernberg should benefit from the settled companies that z. B. Use gastronomy and hotel business .

The operating concept of the Triple Z provides for the economic viability of the center, which should get by without ongoing public funding. In 1998 Triple Z AG generated an annual surplus of around 10,000 euros for the first time . Since then, the start-up and corporate center has been in the black in operational business . In the 2017 financial year , the annual surplus was around 30,000 euros.

The shareholders of Triple Z AG have always spoken out in favor of not paying out the dividend , but instead investing in promoting start-ups and expanding the center. The Triple-Z share is therefore understood as a "promotional share" and not as an investment.
