First waterworks in Essen, around 1870

The Stadtwerke Essen AG is the power company for the city of Essen in the areas of gas, electricity and drinking water. Stadtwerke Essen also takes care of the care and maintenance of the wastewater network in Essen, offers services in the energy sector and operates the local port as a logistics center.

In the gas and drinking water sectors, Stadtwerke is not only a supplier, but also a network operator.

history

The Essener Gasgesellschaft , founded on January 30, 1855, and the waterworks for the city of Essen, which went into operation on October 20, 1864, based on the plans of the English engineer Moore, preceded the Essen public utility . By merging these two companies in March 1867 under the name Städtisches Gas- und Wasserwerk , the predecessor of today's Stadtwerke was created. In 1978 the company name was changed to "Stadtwerke Essen", which is known today.

Stadtwerke Essen has been run as a stock corporation since 1979.

The former waterworks of the city of Essen was part of the route of industrial culture until the end of 2012 .

In 2017 Stadtwerke Essen celebrated its 150th anniversary.

In 2003, Stadtwerke Essen AG and Gelsenwasser AG founded the joint Wassergewinnung Essen GmbH, based in Essen, thereby bundling their activities in the combined waterworks for water extraction on the Ruhr. Protests against price increases

As the basic supplier, Stadtwerke Essen AG supplies more than half of the households in Essen with natural gas. Between 2004 and 2006, the company increased gas prices in several steps by 46%. Around 3,000 citizens opposed these unilateral price regulations by objecting and reducing the discounts with the objection of inequity (Section 315 BGB ).

In order to emphasize the demands, an Essen resident finally asked gas customers to join a so-called class action lawsuit against Stadtwerke Essen AG. 749 Essen gas customers came forward to take part in this collective action. 166 of them sued the regional court in Essen on December 15, 2006 against the gas price increases and the unilateral price determination.

The Essen Regional Court upheld the lawsuit in April 2007. Stadtwerke Essen challenged the judgment before the Hamm Higher Regional Court . On March 6, 2008, the court dismissed the customer's complaint. On January 13, 2010, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) upheld the lawsuit filed by 165 customers of Stadtwerke Essen against gas price increases. The price adjustment clauses used in the special contracts of the complaining customers are ineffective due to unreasonable disadvantage. As a result, the municipal utilities were not entitled to change the gas price (Ref .: VIII ZR 81/08).
