The main cemetery with about 45 hectares of the largest cemetery in Mülheim an der Ruhr . The portal, built around 1928 by the architect Theodor Suhnel and restored between 1984 and 1986, is a listed building . The main cemetery is part of the theme route 23 Parks and Gardens of the Route of Industrial Heritage .

history

After the old town cemetery became too small at the beginning of the 20th century, the main cemetery was laid out in 1915 on a former parade ground and opened on April 15, 1916. The complex was planned by the landscape architects Friedrich Bauer and Walter Günther from Magdeburg. The cemetery was expanded in 1924. In 1978 another extension took place according to plans by the landscape architects Gustav and Rose Wörner .

The main axis in the form of a 300 meter long avenue starting from the main entrance is visually distinctive. The forest areas with exotic trees are also worth seeing.

Since June 13, 1996, the cemetery has had a grave area of ​​around 1000 square meters for Islamic citizens.
