Langenbochum is a northern district of Herten . The name Langenbochum indicates the originally elongated shape of the district, whose main street was lined with beeches.

Ascent and descent as a mining site

The farmers used to belong to the Recklinghausen-Land . Their incorporation, which had gained a large number of inhabitants with the arrival of coal mining between Emscher and Lippe at the turn of the 19th century, took place on April 1, 1926 . For many decades Langenbochum was dominated by the Schlägel & Eisen colliery , which was the largest employer and landlord here.

The pit mallets & iron was the end of the 1990s -years with the Ewald colliery collapsed in the south of Herten to a group mine. When the colliery died out, the colliery was shut down in 1998. Today the city of Herten has some offices in the colliery's annex.

Forced labor camp during the Nazi era

With the Schlägel & Eisen Schacht 3/4/7 forced labor camp on Lyckstraße / (former) Hindenburgstraße, the largest forced labor camp in the area of ​​the city of Herten existed in Langenbochum during the Second World War . The men and women, mainly from Russia, abducted as foreign workers and prisoners of war by German occupation authorities, had to live there under the most miserable conditions. They received completely inadequate nutrition and care. Most of the forced labor they had to do in underground mining or in the other operations of the Schlägel & Eisen colliery. They were treated inhumanly by the guards and guards, often even tortured. At the end of March 1945, the camp inmates were liberated by the US Army.

In the 1960s, a new street was built through the site of this former camp, which was named by those in charge of politics in Herten after the poet Agnes Miegel , who was associated with Nazism .

New home for Transylvanians

The Transylvanian settlement was built in the 1950s and is still intact today. Emigrants of German origin from Transylvania , who had to leave Romania as a result of the Second World War , came to Herten when they were offered the opportunity to work in coal mining in 1952 and they shape the picture with their culture and folklore events.

In the 1960s , the Transylvanians built the Transylvanian House of Youth, which was inaugurated in 1964 to plan gatherings and celebrations there. The Transylvanian House is still used today for the youth club. The Transylvanian House can also be rented for events.

Herta meat and sausage factory

The largest employer in Langenbochum is currently the meat and sausage factory Herta KG, which has been a subsidiary of Nestlé AG for over 10 years . The meat factory founded by Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth from Herten had its original location in downtown Herten next to the Herten municipal high school . As part of a comprehensive redesign of the inner city in the 1970s, the company relocated. The Europe-wide known brand company Herta found spacious premises on the outskirts of Langenbochum for their modern administrative and operational buildings, which were then considered exemplary.

Sports

In the sport, the district is known for its football club Blau-Weiß Westfalia Langenbochum , which emerges from SG Herten-Langenbochum and Westfalia Scherlebeck . Especially the youth work produced several youth national players and Bundesliga players such as B. Benedikt Höwedes , Christian Timm , Frank Riethmann and Michael Ratajczak . The club is considered a talent factory for the big clubs like Borussia Dortmund , FC Schalke 04 and VfL Bochum . Every year the club organizes one of the most famous youth football tournaments in Germany, the Euro Cup for U-11 juniors. Teams from all over Europe accept the invitation every year. In addition to teams from FC Bayern Munich , Hamburger SV , Werder Bremen etc., clubs such as Inter Milan , Slavia Prague , Racing Strasbourg and Rapid Vienna have also participated.

Every year for the harvest festival , visitors from all over North Rhine-Westphalia come to the Catholic parish church of St. Maria Visitation to view the oversized "fruit and harvest carpet", which is differently designed by women from the parish.
