Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth (born July 30, 1930 in Herten ; † February 15, 2020 in Munich ) was a German entrepreneur and a pioneer in the field of organic food production .

biography

Schweisfurth learned the butcher's trade. Schweisfurth implemented his experience as an intern in the large slaughterhouses in Chicago in the industrialization of domestic meat processing. He developed the L. Schweisfurth meat and canning factory founded in 1902 into the largest meat processing company in Europe: Herta in Herten (now a subsidiary of the Spanish food company Casa Tarradellas and the Nestlé group). 25,000 pigs and 5,000 cattle were processed weekly at that time. In 1972 the architect Werner Ruhnau developed the open-plan office of the Herta company, in which he incorporated works of art into the design. Works by Daniel Spoerri , Hugo Kükelhaus , Christo and the installation Mit (H) ropa by Wolf Vostell von Schweisfurth were purchased and exhibited in the open-plan office.

When it became clear that after Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth's withdrawal, neither his two sons nor his daughter wanted to continue running the company, he sold his company to the Nestlé Group in 1984.

Immediately after the sale, Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth began to keep pigs according to the principles of organic farming on Gut Herrmannsdorf near Glonn in Bavaria . His quote comes from this time: "It was suddenly clear to me that meat from animals that have been tortured in this way cannot be life-enhancing food for us humans."

Schweisfurth last lived in Herrmannsdorf.

Conception

In Schweisfurth's new concept, principles of sustainable ecological agriculture are combined with principles of animal ethics . The theoretical foundation also includes nutritional and gastrosophic aspects. Last but not least, the reorientation of Schweisfurth also has a work ethic character, since classic ways of working and living in agriculture and the food trade are being revived and upgraded.

Hermannsdorf country workshops and shops

The Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten , which resulted from the reorientation of Schweisfurth, with stables , slaughter / butcher , bakery , dairy / cheese dairy , brewery , farm shop , beer garden and inn are today considered to be pioneers in natural, species-appropriate and sustainable food production on a large scale, they combine a fully organic operation (including its own biogas plant and its own sewage treatment plant ) with the aim of economic efficiency (sales network and own shops as well as market operations) and ideal / artistic claim (numerous works of art in and around the courtyard, regular courtyard markets with an artistic accompanying program). In 2008 the Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten were awarded the organic retail price, a " Selly ". The company is now run by his son Karl Schweisfurth , while Karl's twin brother Georg is one of the founders of Basic AG .

In and around Munich, the Herrmannsdorfer Landwerkstätten operate twelve of their own Herrmannsdorfer shops, in which, in addition to their own products, a basic range of organic food is sold, and they also deliver their products to various organic shops across Germany. Deliveries to Basic AG were discontinued in September 2007 due to the Schwarz Group's entry into this organic supermarket chain.

Schweisfurth Foundation

The Schweisfurth Foundation, founded by Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, is committed to research into healthy and natural nutrition and, together with the International Society for Livestock Husbandry (IGN), awarded the Schweisfurth Research Prize for species-appropriate livestock husbandry between 1991 and 2002 .

criticism

In Herten, the hometown of Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, criticism was voiced in 2010 that the Schweisfurth family's fortunes were also "generated" by exploiting forced labor in the Third Reich. 115 forced laborers assigned by the employment office were employed and housed on the Schweisfurth company premises.

In 2016 there were allegations against Schweisfurth that its farms use antibiotics and that the way pigs are kept is viewed critically. Schweisfurth justified the use of antibiotics as necessary when alternative remedies failed. The use corresponds to strict guidelines. The earlier keeping of the mother sows in crate stalls was a result of the deliberations in which the protection of the piglets was in the foreground, which could not be crushed in this way.
