history

In 1897 Ludwig and Hermine Schweisfurth founded a butcher's shop in Herten. Branches were soon opened. The first factory went into operation in 1902.

"Herta" was registered as a trademark in 1948 and registered in 1951. A cooling express service for delivery to the branches and trading partners was subsequently introduced. In 1953 a branch in Dortmund offered the first freshly packaged sausage assortment for self-service, although hardly a household already had a refrigerator at that time. From 1964 the company expanded to other European countries, first through exports to France, then also by acquiring production facilities in the country. Market entries in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Great Britain followed. Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth gradually turned the company into a European meat company.

In 1984 Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth sold the company to the Swiss food company Nestlé. From 1986 to the end of 2019, Herta was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nestlé. Since then Nestlé has only held a 40% minority stake, while the remaining shares belong to the Spanish food company Casa Tarradellas.

In 2014 the Federal Cartel Office imposed a three-digit million fine on 21 sausage manufacturers, including Herta, for illegal price fixing.

In 2019 it will be announced that Nestlé has commissioned the investment bank Rothschild to sell Herta's cold cuts and meat products in six countries.
