The inner-city shopping center Limbecker Platz is located on the north-western edge of Essen city center , between Limbecker Platz , Berliner Platz and Ostfeldstrasse. The first construction phase was opened on March 13, 2008, the second and last on October 22, 2009.
prehistory
On March 1, 2008, the previous Karstadt department store on Limbecker Platz was finally closed. The previous Karstadt building by Theodor Althoff from 1912 was not a listed building , because only the facade was made of sandstone, the interior was made of reinforced concrete, which was in a very poor condition due to mountain damage and which is why the house had a height difference of over the width of the side one meter. After the demolition of the old Karstadt building including the parking garage, its 35 meter high tower was blown up on June 1, 2008 as the last part of the building with 15 kilograms of explosives and 80 detonators. The Karstadt sports store and the building of the SinnLeffers department store (formerly Quelle ) as well as some snack stands also had to give way to the new shopping center .
Project phases
In May 2006, work began on the first construction phase of the shopping center. This required the demolition of the Karstadt Sport department store, which was finished at the beginning of June, and the demolition of the SinnLeffers department store (formerly Quelle ), which was finished at the beginning of July. From SinnLeffers a covered pedestrian bridge led over Ostfeldstrasse to a parking garage, which was removed and attached to the new building at the end of 2007. In the meantime, the bridge was parked on the site of the former wholesale market / freight yard. A snack pavilion was also torn down.
The official laying of the foundation stone took place on September 13, 2006. In May 2007, the construction of the facade and the interior work began at the same time . Shortly after the closure of the old Karstadt building on March 1, 2008, preparations for demolition began.
realization
The project partners of the new shopping center are KarstadtQuelle AG , which fills around a third of the new shopping center with its own branches (Karstadt-Welthaus 20,000 m², Karstadt Sport 4,000 m²), ECE Projektmanagement GmbH & Co. KG , and Union Investment Real Estate AG .
Incidents during construction
On October 24, 2006, a five-hundredweight aerial bomb was found which, because of its acid detonator , had to be defused immediately, without any consequences.
shopping mall
The new Limbecker Platz shopping center opened on October 22, 2009. The cost of the project is estimated at 300 million euros. The total sales area of 70,000 square meters is spread over three and a half sales levels with around 200 shops. The branch mix consists of sports, gastronomy and food - it is dominated by textiles, hardware and a department store. Every day around 51,000 visitors come to Limbecker Platz, whose extended catchment area is estimated by the operator to be 245,348 inhabitants. 2000 employees are employed in the center.
architecture
The facade was designed by the architects Henn from Munich and should evoke the association of a swinging dress. At the entrances, the lower end of the facade is raised to reveal the glass facade behind. The aluminum facade is provided with lights that give the impression of sequins .
After the old Karstadt department store, formerly the Althoff department store , was closed on March 1, 2008 , it was torn down in mid-March 2008 due to the poor state of construction. In memory of the old department store, pictures and some sandstones from the old facade are exhibited in the new shopping center.
At the point of the main entrance on Limbecker Straße , where the old department store stood, part of the old facade was ultimately integrated into the new one. A picture of the old department store installed there indicates the historical background of the sandstones.

Transport connection / planning
By public transport, the Ruhr train the shopping center on the station is Berliner Platz accessible by buses , underground on two levels -propelled rail vehicles (in north-south direction) and trams (in east-west direction) is approached. The former entrance to the subway station on Limbecker Straße is integrated into the new shopping center.
The Essen-Zentrum exit of the A 40 is located relatively close to the south in order to reach the shopping center by car. Since the old Karstadt multi-storey car park with over 600 parking spaces was demolished in December 2007, parking spaces for around 2000 cars were created on the upper floors (2nd to 4th floor, roof) of the new building.
In addition to the construction work, further renovation work was carried out on the streets Ostfeldstrasse, Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse and Berliner Platz. This included, among other things, the construction of the driveways to the two entrances to the parking levels and the simplification of traffic management by converting Berliner Platz into a roundabout .
