John "Johnny" Aston junior (born June 28, 1947 in Manchester ) is a former English football player . Mostly used as a left winger in the storm , he won the English championship with Manchester United in 1967 and the European Cup a year later . His father of the same name had previously also been a professional footballer and English champion with "United".
Athletic career
Johnny Aston's footballing career has been overshadowed in two ways at Manchester United. On the one hand, he had to follow in the great footsteps of his father , who had won the FA Cup in 1948 and the English championship in 1952 with the same club and was also an English national player. In addition, he was part of a team that ran up on the offensive with spectacular players such as George Best , Denis Law and Bobby Charlton and his style of play was a little less quality in comparison.
He played his first game in 1965 against Leicester City and already in the early stages of his career he reached the sporting climax by winning the English championship in 1967 and a year later by winning the European Cup . He contributed five goals in 30 games to the league title and in the European Cup final against Benfica Lisbon he represented the hospitalized Denis Law. His performance against Benfica was considered the best game of his career, allegedly benefiting from the fact that his opponent Adolfo Calisto had injured himself early on at right defense and the attacking game from Manchester had often run over his side. Aston's strengths lay in his speed.
When Aston broke their leg against local rivals Manchester City in August 1968 , a slow end was heralded. From then on, he was only rarely able to build on previous performances and the home crowd often looked to the moderately popular Aston as the “scapegoat” for poor team performances. At the end of the 1972/73 season, he finally moved to the second division at Luton Town . There he spent a good five years before joining league rivals Mansfield Town in September 1977 . In Mansfield he suffered relegation for the first time in his career , but in July 1978 he moved on to the Blackburn Rovers . At the time, they continued to play in the second division , but the following year Aston also descended into the third division with the "Rovers". In the third division , he then played two final games before hanging up his football boots.
After his retirement, he worked in a pet shop in Stalybridge .
