Ekaterina Shamonina (* 1970 in Tver , Soviet Union ) is a Russian physicist in the field of electromagnetism and photonics at the University of Oxford .

Life

From 1987 Shamonina studied physics at the Lomonossow University in Moscow, from where she moved to the University of Osnabrück after completing her degree in 1993 for a doctorate . There she received her doctorate in 1998 with the topic "Dynamic holography in photorefractive crystals" . In 2000 Shamonina was accepted into the Emmy Noether Program of the DFG , part of which she did research at the University of Oxford until 2002 and then until 2003 at Imperial College London. In 2013, after positions in Osnabrück, Erlangen and Imperial College, she was appointed to a professorship at Wadham College, University of Oxford.

Her research focus is in the area of electromagnetic metamaterials , where she coined the term magnetoinductive waves, among other things. She is the director of the Oxford Institute for Metamaterials Engineering, Technology and Applications (OxiMETA).
