Briatexte ( Occitan : Britèsta ) is a French commune with 2,016 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Castres and is part of the canton of Graulhet . The inhabitants call themselves Briatextois .

geography

Briatexte lies on the Dadou , a tributary of the Agout . Briatexte is located about 40 km northeast of Toulouse and about 27 km southwest of Albi . Briatexte is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Puybegon in the north and north-west, Graulhet in the east, Cabanès in the south and south-east, Fiac in the south and Saint-Gauzens in the west and south-west.

The former route nationale 631 (today's D631) leads through the municipality .

history

Briatexte is a bastide that was founded in 1287 by Simon de Briseteste, the Seneschal of Carcassonne, for King Philip IV . The settlement was built on the site of the former Cathar village of Touelles. The place was fortified in the 14th century.

Briatexte was besieged in 1622 during the Wars of Religion. The residents had converted to Protestantism.
