The castle Schöneck in Flensburg is a villa castle, a villa in castle form the 19th century. The cultural monument now serves as the seat of the Danish Consulate General .

history

The Villenburg was built in 1883/84 by the architect Alexander Wilhelm Prale for the Flensburg grain merchant Matthias Hübsch (* 1865, † 1932) as a yellow stone structure, with red, decorative brick lines. The architect Prale was considered a leading church architect and planner of upper-class villas. By adopting aristocratic architecture in the 19th century, the upper bourgeois tower demonstrated its wealth and its claim to political influence. Schöneck Castle was built on a picturesque hillside above the Nordergraben road to support its expression . It was initially given the address Graben 5. Today it has the address Nordergraben 19. On the north side of the building there was a polygonal tower with a pointed roof , which has been preserved to this day, but today has a tent roof . Two balconies were attached to the front, from which the Flensburg Fjord could be seen at that time . A garden had also been laid out around it. In 1895, the interior of the Prale building was redesigned again. Around 1900, many upper-class merchants who had previously lived in downtown Flensburg began to build or buy houses on Westliche Höhe . The city continued to grow up the west bank. The surroundings of Schöneck Castle slowly changed. In 1899/1900 the Catholic Church was built in the immediate vicinity of the castle, partially in the line of sight to the fjord .

In 1905/06, the Schöneck Castle was extended by Prahle with an annex to the south, which houses the music hall. On the north side of Schöneck Castle, a two-storey porch consisting of a vestibule and a stair tower was added for the staff. In 1906, the elaborate glazing by Gottfried Heinersdorff was added to the stairwell to the north. The grain merchant Matthias Hübsch made a large fortune with his grain trade. He made substantial foundations. In 1913 he was given the title of " Prussian Royal Council of Commerce ". The grain merchant and Prussian commercial councilor Matthias Hübsch died in 1932. Matthias Hübsch and his family were involved in the community of St. Nikolai for decades . Matthias Hübsch and other family members took on representative positions on the parish church council. His nephew, the grain merchant Richard Christian Hübsch (* 1882, † 1937) was immortalized with the family coat of arms in the coat of arms window in the Nikolaikirche, which was built between 1940 and 1952. The coat of arms shows an orange ear of corn on a dark red background.

After the referendum in Schleswig , Flensburg did not become Danish. But with the new border, the grain trade collapsed. Before the death of the builder Matthias Hübsch, the Danish state acquired Schöneck Castle in order to set up a Danish representation in Flensburg. For this purpose, Schöneck Castle was rebuilt by the architect Andreas Maria Dall , who soon afterwards also realized the construction plans for the Duborg Skolen . The representative villa has served as the Danish Consulate General since then. 1990–1991 renewed renovation work. When Denmark closed the borders in the course of the refugee crisis in Germany from 2015 onwards , radical left-wing extremists attacked the consulate. The attackers smashed some of the window panes near the ground. The higher-lying, valuable glass windows remained undamaged. The neighboring building Nordergraben 15 is evidently located in the surrounding, preserved garden and appears optically as an auxiliary building of the building complex.

Consulars

In September 2017 the Danish Foreign Ministry (Udenrigsministeriet) hired Kim Andersen , member of the Folketing ( Venstre ) and chairman of the “ South Schleswig Committee” (Sydslesvig-udvalget) , as the new Consul General . Andersen succeeds Henrik Becker-Christensen , who took up the post in 1998, after almost 20 years of service.
