Saïx ( Occitan Sais ) is a French commune with 3548 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitania region . It is located in the Arrondissement of Castres and belongs to the canton of Le Pastel .

geography

Saïx is located near the Monts du Sidobre and the Montagne Noire , on the southern bank of the Agout River , a tributary of the Tarn , about 5.5 kilometers west-southwest of Castres , 59 km east of Toulouse and 37 km south of Albi .

history

The place name is derived from the Latin saxum (rock). The municipality consists of the towns of Saïx and Longuegineste.

In the 12th century, the area in and around Saïx was under the rule of the Benedictines of Castres. Saïx was destroyed several times in both the Hundred Years War and the Religious War from 1563 to 1568. The castle was razed in 1582.
