Massaguel is a French commune with 405 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Castres and the canton of La Montagne Noire .

The municipality is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park .

history

There are two differing views on the etymology of the place name. One group is of the opinion that the name comes from “Massac” and this from the Roman name “Maccius”. Others are of the opinion that the name comes from “Masse de Agua”, since an underground water basin is hidden under the place.

Around 1152, the place was still known as "Macaguel" and an important market town when it fought desperately but ultimately unsuccessfully in the Albigensian Crusade against Count Simon IV. De Montfort .

In 1569 Protestants took over the castle in the village when religious conflicts arose across France.
