Algans is a French commune with 203 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Tarn department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Castres and the canton of Lavaur Cocagne (previously Cuq-Toulza ).
geography
Algans is located about 30 kilometers east of Toulouse and about 20 kilometers west of Castres in northern Lauragais . The Ruisseau d'Algans , a tributary of the Girou, flows through the municipality . Characteristic of the area around Algans is the lack of large forest areas. Except for small tree-lined slopes on the hills, arable and pastureland predominate.
The districts belong to Algans
- En Bourrel and La Croix Rouge to the north,
- Roudoule to the northwest and
- Saint-Perdouls to the west.
The village of Algans is about 200 m above sea level; the highest point in the north of the municipality reaches 308 m.
Algans borders the following municipalities:
- Roquevidal and Pratviel in the north,
- Magrin in the northeast,
- Lacroisille in the southeast,
- Cadix in the south and
- Cambon-lès-Lavaur to the west.

The municipality Algans was established on 22 November 1829 from the merger of the villages Algans and Lastens by decree King Charles X .

With 203 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Algans is one of the smaller communities in the Tarn department. After the population had been over 600 in the middle of the 19th century (in 1836 there were still 630 inhabitants), a continuous slow population decline has been recorded since then. There has been slow growth since the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Traditionally the most important branch of business in Algans is agriculture (dairy farming, grain and feed cultivation, poultry liver production). There are also small craft and service companies. Algans is located off the main national transport routes. The southern neighboring municipality of Cadix is located on the highway from Toulouse to Béziers . There are train connections to Toulouse and Castres in Saint-Paul-Cap-de-Joux in the Agout valley, eight kilometers to the northeast .
