Caprasius of Agen
Caprasius von Agen ( French St Caprais , Spanish San Caprasio ; † 303 in Agen ) was an early Christian martyr who was venerated as a saint by the people. According to a later legend, he was said to have been Bishop of Agen . He is mentioned in the Martyrologium Romanum ; his feast day is October 20th.
Vita
Life dates and biographical details from the life of Caprasius are unclear; The origins of the legends surrounding his martyrdom are much later than the underlying events. The only fact is that a church was consecrated in his honor as early as the 6th century.
While fleeing from the persecution of Christians by the prefect Dacian , Caprasius is said to have hid on a wooded hill near the town of Agen in the south of France. From there he is supposed to experience the martyrdom of St. Fides of Agen , whereupon he left his hiding place and publicly professed his belief. He was then sentenced to death and beheaded along with Fides' siblings Alberta, Primus and Felician.
Adoration
To St. Caprasius are consecrated several churches in southern France and northern Spain; the most important are the Cathedral of Agen and the Church of San Caprasio in Santa Cruz de la Serós . Several French places also bear the name of Saint-Caprais .
presentation
Medieval representations of the saint are unknown; the few modern depictions show him as a martyr or in bishop's robe.
