The Agout is a river in southern France that runs in the Occitania region . It rises in the Monts de l'Espinouse , on the southwest flank of the Sommet de l'Espinouse summit of the same name , in the municipality of Cambon-et-Salvergues . On its way it touches the departments of Hérault and Tarn .

River course

With many changes in direction, the Agout generally drains from west to northwest, crossing the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park on the first half of its route . Between Vabre and Roquecourbe, it cuts a 300 m deep gorge with several meanders through the granite massif of the Sidobre Mountains. Behind Castres it flows into a wide Muldental valley, which it flows through in wide meanders. After 194 kilometers, it finally flows into the Tarn as a left tributary at Saint-Sulpice-la-Pointe . The outflow of the Agout is regulated by the Barrage de la Raviège and two smaller dams in the area of the gorge.
