Piquepoul Blanc
Piquepoul Blanc is a white wine variety that is permitted in the French wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Lirac as well as in the Spanish DO Alella , Empordà , Catalunya and Pla de Bages . It is also recommended for the entire south, but rarely used. It appears in the white wine Picquepoul de Pinet (also called Picpoul de Pinet ) from the Coteaux du Languedoc region . This wine consists of at least 70% Piquepoul Blanc.
The grape produces flowery, very acidic wines. The vine owes its name to the acidity; Piquepoul translates as lip bite or lip stick .
Before the phylloxera infestation, it was very widespread and was often blended with the Clairette Blanche grape variety . In the Armagnac region it was the most common vine; today it is replaced by the mass carrier Ugni Blanc . After the stocks had dropped to 500 hectares in the 1980s , the variety was planted again. In 2007, a vineyard area of 1,426 hectares was raised., In Spain it is known in the north of the country such as in Alella .
Parentage: Mutation of the red variety Piquepoul Noir .
Ampelographic varietal characteristics
In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:
- The shoot tip is half open. It is hairy white wool with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are slightly hairy.
- The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are small and closely set compared to other varieties.
- The cone-shaped to cylindrical grape is medium-sized. The rounded berries are also medium-sized.
The vigorous grape variety only produces low yields. The ideal vine training is that of the gobelet . Piquepoul Blanc ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel grape variety and is therefore one of the late-ripening varieties. The variety is sensitive to powdery mildew and raw rot .
