Piquepoul Noir

The red wine variety Piquepoul Noir is grown in the south of France . On the Rhône , it is approved in the appellations of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Ventoux . In the Portuguese Vinho Verde , the variety also plays an albeit subordinate role.

The late-ripening variety delivers moderate yields. It was therefore only cultivated to a limited extent after the so-called phylloxera disaster . In 1999 only 99 hectares of wooded area were surveyed in France .

The white grape varieties Piquepoul Blanc and Piquepoul Gris with partly identical synonyms are a mutation of the red variety.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is half open. It is hairy white wool with a crimson tinge. The young leaves are slightly hairy.
  • The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are small and closely set compared to other varieties.
  • The cone-shaped to cylindrical grape is medium-sized. The rounded berries are also medium-sized.

The vigorous grape variety only produces low yields. The ideal vine training is that of the gobelet . Piquepoul Blanc ripens around 30 days after the Gutedel grape variety and is therefore one of the late-ripening varieties. The variety is sensitive to powdery mildew and raw rot .
