Clairette Blanche is a white wine variety that loves sunny locations with poor soils. Therefore, this late-ripening variety is often found in the French regions of Provence , Rhône and Languedoc . Clairette Blanche is also cultivated in many other countries, for example in Argentina , Australia , Brazil, Spain , Mexico, Italy , Portugal , South Africa , Uruguay , Morocco and the USA .

In the past, Clairette Blanche was mainly used to make vermouth wine . Single-variety wines are now also made from it . The high-yielding variety produces spicy, strong alcohol ( 12-14 percent alcohol by volume ) and is used as a component for simple sparkling and blended wines as well as some dessert wines and straw wines . Since white wine oxidizes quickly, Clairette Blanche wine should be drunk young. Connoisseurs will discover notes of green apples, fennel and linden blossom in wines.

It is contained in the name of the three appellations Clairette de Bellegarde (Languedoc), Clairette de Die (Rhône) (here, however, it is the Muscat blanc à petits grains , which is essentially responsible for the fruity taste) and Clairette du Languedoc (Languedoc) . It is also part of the AOC wines Châteauneuf-du-Pape , Côtes du Rhône , Côtes de Provence , Cassis , Bandol , Bellet , Côtes du Ventoux , Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , Les Baux de Provence , Lirac , Palette and Tavel . In 2007, a planted vineyard area of 2,505 hectares was surveyed in France (source ONIVINS)

In France, clones 68, 69, 93, 94, 97, 98, 175, 207, 208 and 209 are approved. Clairette Blanche is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

The term Clairette is an often used synonym for many grape varieties in southern France, for example for Bourboulenc (Clairette Grosse), Calitor Blanc (Clairette Egreneuse), Trebbiano Toscano (Clairette d'Afrique), Ugni Blanc (Clairette Monde) and Verdesse (Clairette) Chindrieux).
