Clairette de Bellegarde

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clairette de Bellegarde wine-growing region is located in the very northeast of the Languedoc wine-growing region and extends southeast of the city of Nîmes and north of the Camargue along the N 113 national road in the municipality of Bellegarde . The area forms the transition to the Rhône wine-growing region and, geographically, still belongs to the Rhone Valley . The appellation is located as an enclave within the area of the Costières de Nîmes and received on June 28, 1949 the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short).

Since July 19, 2004 it has been officially recognized that the Costières de Nîmes corresponds more closely to a Rhône wine in its typicality. The enclave Clairette de Bellegarde is still included in the Languedoc wine-growing region!

The appellation's white wine is made from 100 percent Clairette Blanche grapes . The prescribed planting density is at least 4000 vines / ha . The yield is limited to 60 hectoliters / ha. In the first version of the decree from 1949, this value was still a low 35 hectoliters / ha. Red wines from the region are marketed under the name Costières de Nimes.

The terrain is flat; the vineyards are at a height between 20 and 100 m. The soils consist of up to 12 m thick Villafranchium gravel . The Villafranchium is an unofficially recognized geological age , which partially overlaps with the Gelasian and the Old Pleistocene . The pebble deposits come from the Rhone , the Gardons and partly from the Durance . The Villa franchium gravel and the particular climate of the Costière du Gard are the basis of the terroir of the Denomination of Origin .
