Languedoc-Montpeyroux is a wine-growing region within the Languedoc at the foothills of the Causse du Larzac , which was named after the wine-growing village of Montpeyroux . The terroir forms a geologically and climatically uniform zone around the village. Barren soils made of limestone and volcanic rock, gravel, blue marl and red clay ("Terra rossa"), which are covered by cool, dry northwest Tramontane winds and which otherwise only provide an agriculturally usable basis the natural basis for viticulture. The wind provides a microclimate that, together with the porous, drained soil , ensures healthy growth of the vines.

This region is predestined for Syrah and Grenache , but Mourvèdre , Carignan and Cinsault are also grown here. Even wines grown in an optimal south-facing position retain great freshness and good structure due to their small climatic conditions.

The small-scale cultivation in the growing area is managed by around 20 self-bottling winegrowers and the Montpeyroux Coopérative Artisanale . The cooperative was founded in 1950, but had a predecessor organization from 1910 to 1929.

The appellation was registered in 1985 as AOC Coteau du Languedoc-Montpeyroux and specified in AOP Languedoc-Montpeyroux in 2007 . The self-declared aim of the appellation is to give its independent terroir a reputation like Faugères or Saint-Chinian. It is also intended to create a cru .
