Bourboulenc is an old white wine variety . It has been grown in southern France for centuries, especially in Provence , the southern Rhône Valley and Languedoc . It is relatively rare because as a very late-ripening variety it only matures reliably in good years, and is almost only used as a blend. It is one of the thirteen permitted varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is added to give the wine more acidity and freshness. Only in the characterful white wines from La Clape (an area near Narbonne in Languedoc) is it used as the predominant variety. In the white Minervois , Bourboulenc, together with Macabeo, represents over 50% of the blend , and together with Grenache Blanc , these two grape varieties also predominate in Corbières Blanc. In addition, it is in the Denominations of Origin Saint-Chinian , Faugères , Costières de Nîmes , Bandol , Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , Coteaux du Tricastin , Côtes du Luberon , Côtes du Ventoux , Côtes du Rhône , Côtes du Rhône Villages , Vacqueyras , Tavel and Lirac approved. In France, a vineyard area of 622 hectares was surveyed (as of 2007)

The grape probably originally came from Greece . Smaller plantings are also known in Argentina . Despite similar synonyms, the Bourboulenc variety is not related to the Clairette Blanche grape variety .
