The Tuchin uprising was an uprising from 1381 to 1384 of the rural population in Languedoc , who opposed the tax policy and the presence of mercenaries . The peasants also defended themselves against the English troops of Gascony . The uprising, particularly carried out by the farmers and craftsmen, was also supported by some powerful people and the urban elite. Between 1384 and 1389 the uprising also reached the Auvergne .

The peasants sided with Charles III. who fought against the Angevins in Provence . This contributed to the conquest of Aix-en-Provence . In the spring of 1384 the leader of the rebels, Étienne Augier , holed up in the Alpilles . He established a reign of terror in the region. On July 24, 1384, his troops stormed Arles. After a few hours, the citizens chased them out of the city. The following day revenge was taken on many of the Tuchin fighters.
