Career

Craig Billington began his career as a hockey player with the Belleville Bulls , for which he was active from 1983 to 1986 in the Canadian top junior league Ontario Hockey League . In the 1984/85 season he was elected to the first All-Star Team in the league and received the Bobby Smith Trophy as a player who best combined athletic and academic success. During his time with the Belleville Bulls, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1984 in the second round as a total of 23 players by the New Jersey Devils . For New Jersey he made his debut in the National Hockey League during the 1985/86 season . In his rookie year , he was on the ice in 18 games in the NHL. In the next four years he was only occasionally with the New Jersey Devils between the posts, while he mainly ran up for their farm teams Maine Mariners and Utica Devils in the American Hockey League . In the 1990/91 season he took part with Team Canada in preparation for the A World Championship. There he was able to convince, whereupon he ran regularly for the New Jersey Devils in the NHL for two years. Good performance earned him a nomination for the 1993 NHL All-Star Game .

In June 1993 Billington was given together with Troy Mallette and a four-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 1993 in exchange for Peter Sidorkiewicz to the Ottawa Senators . With the Senators, who had only started playing a year earlier, he was not particularly convincing in the 1993/94 season like the rest of the team and had a goal average of 4.59 per game in 63 games. In the 1994/95 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , he was only nine times for Ottawa between the posts, but was again only able to show a goal against goal of 4.07. Shortly before the end of the season he was therefore transferred within the NHL to the Boston Bruins , where he came in the 1995/96 season as a backup goalkeeper to 27 missions. He was then signed by the reigning Stanley Cup winner Colorado Avalanche , where he served as a substitute goalkeeper for three years. His last position was for the Washington Capitals from 1999 to 2003 , before ending his active career at the age of 36.

Billington has been Assistant General Manager for the Colorado Avalanche since 2009 and has also been General Manager of San Antonio Rampage since 2015 .
