Old Basing is a village and civil parish in the north-east of the English county of Hampshire . It is east of Basingstoke and had a population of 7,232 at the 2001 census. The former name of the place was Basing.
history
Old Basing was first settled around 700 by Anglo-Saxons from the Basingas tribe, who gave the village its name. The Battle of Basing took place near the place on January 22nd, 871, in which the Great Army defeated Wessex under King Ethelred of Wessex . The dead were buried in nearby Lychfield. The place is also mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.
In the center of the village, called The Street , there are many old houses, as well as St. Mary's Church. The Loddon River, which has its source nearby, flows through the village, which is best known for the ruins of Basing House . Basing House was built on the site of a Norman castle between 1532 and 1561 and was the seat of the Marquesses of Winchester for several generations . In the English Civil War (1642–1649), the aristocratic seat was destroyed after a 24-week siege.
Many names in Old Basing are still reminiscent of the Civil War today, such as Cavaliers Road and Muskett Copse . Many places are also named after Oliver Cromwell . For example Oliver's Battery or Cromwell Cottage .
education
Old Basing has both an infant school and a junior school called St Mary's, which is supported by the Church. Another primary school was opened a few years ago near Lychpit. Old Basing children can continue their education at various secondary schools in the Basingstoke area.
Sports
Basing Rovers FC is the local football club. It was founded in 1886. The Old Basing Recreation Areas are home to a variety of sporting events such as the Old Basing Carnival. There are courts for rugby union , soccer , cricket , tennis , archery and bowls .
Local politics
Old Basing elects three council members to Basingstoke and Dean town councils and is a member of the Basingstoke constituency in general elections.
The current member of parliament is Maria Miller ( Conservative Party ). The city council members are Patricia Read ( Liberal Democrats ), Stephen Marks and Sven Godesen (both Conservative Party).

Edward Lear wrote the following Limerick on Old Basing in his Book of Nonsense of 1846 :
