Josef Augusta (born November 24, 1946 in Havlíčkův Brod , Czechoslovakia ; † February 16, 2017 in Jihlava ) was a Czech ice hockey coach and former player. His son Patrik is also a former ice hockey player and has been the manager of HC Dukla Jihlava since 2008 .

Career as a player

Josef Augusta began his career in 1956 in his hometown with Jiskra Havlíčkův Brod . At that time this club played in the 2nd division, the second division of Czechoslovakia. He stayed in his hometown until the end of the 1963/64 season before he had to do his military service at the age of 18. He moved to the army club Dukla Jihlava , for which he should play until 1982.

In 1967 he won his first championship title in Czechoslovakia with Dukla . In the following five years Dukla became serial champion of the ČSSR. Two other national championship titles followed for Augusta in 1974 and 1982. He also won the Spengler Cup with Dukla in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1978 and 1982. In total, he completed 16 seasons in the top division of the ČSSR, in which he scored 168 goals in 552 games .

In 1982 Augusta received permission to move to other Western European countries because of his services. He joined the VER Selb and played for this in the 1982/83 season in the 2nd Bundesliga . At the end of the season Selb was relegated to the league and Augusta ended his career.

International

Josef Augusta received his first nomination for a world championship for the world title fights in 1969 , in which he won the bronze medal with the national selection of the CSSR . Further participation followed in 1974 , 1975 and 1978 , where he won the silver medal.

In 1976 he was nominated for the Canada Cup and reached the final against Canada with the national team. In the final game he scored a goal to equalize 3: 3 - but ultimately the Czechoslovaks lost the game 5: 4 after extra time. In the same year Augusta was a member of the ČSSR squad at the Winter Olympics and won the silver medal again with his team.

He scored a total of 24 goals in 100 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

Career as a coach

Since the end of his career, Augusta worked as an ice hockey coach. First he was in charge of Dukla Jihlava's youth teams before he became coach of the men's team in 1987. In the 1990/91 season he was the assistant coach of Jaroslav Holík when Dukla won another championship title. From 1992 and in the first season of the Extraliga Augusta supervised the AC ZPS Zlín , but was dismissed during the season. Together with his assistant coach Miloš Říha he moved to HC Olomouc , with whom he became Czech champion in 1994 . He was then signed by the Italian HC Alleghe before returning to Jihlava in 1995. There he was dismissed due to a sporting failure and looked after the B national team of the Czech Republic for the following three years.

From 1999 Augusta looked after the Czech national team as Ivan Hlinka's assistant coach . At the 1999 World Cup, the Czechs won the gold medal. Despite this success, Hlinka resigned as national coach in February 2000 and became head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League . Thereupon Josef Augusta became head coach of the national team and won with them the gold medal at the world championships in 2000 and 2001.

After the fifth place in the national selection at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Augusta resigned from his office and was replaced by Slavomír Lener . Between 2002 and 2003 he worked as managing director at HC Havířov . At the beginning of the 2005/06 season he was head coach of HC Slovan Bratislava , but was sacked at the end of 2005. He then worked as a television commentator.

From 2008 Josef Augusta was again under contract with Jihlava. In the 2008/09 season of the 1st division he was the assistant coach of Karel Dvořák . In the 2009-10 season he was the head coach of Dukla.

Augusta died in Jihlava in February 2017 after a long illness.
