Winter Asian Games 2017 / Ice Hockey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ice hockey competitions of the VIII Winter Asian Games took place from February 18 - one day before the actual opening ceremony - to February 26, 2017 in three ice rinks in the Japanese city of Sapporo . In addition to the host nation Japan, 17 other countries took part in the men's competition.

The men's tournament again had a record participation with 18 teams. Initially, 20 teams had registered for the tournament, including the Philippines , Turkmenistan , Indonesia and Iran, four countries that were making their first international appearances with their national teams. However, Bahrain withdrew its team shortly before the tournament started. The Iranian team did arrive, but more than half of the team did not receive a valid player permit , so the team was out of competition. Due to the large differences in performance, the nations were divided into three independent divisions. Only the four teams participating in the top division were able to win medals.

Six teams took part in the women's ice hockey tournament for the first time. The teams from Hong Kong and Thailand were new .
