Catocala brandti is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae). The species wasdedicated posthumously to Fred Hermann Brandt , who researcheda large part of the lepidopteran fauna thereas part of his extensive scientific work in Iran .

The upper side of the forewing shows various shades of brown, which are slightly darkened in the root field. While the outer, black-brown transverse line is strongly jagged, the inner one is almost straight. The upper side of the hind wing has a yellow color, a wide, black-brown outer and a narrow, slightly curved central band of the same color. The outer band is interrupted by a small yellow field near the anal angle . The thorax is mostly lightly dusted with moss green. The abdomen is yellowish.

Similar species

The similar species Catocala nymphagoga differs from Catocala brandti by the somewhat less pronounced markings on the upper side of the forewing, the more kinked black-brown inner middle band on the upper side of the hind wing and the brownish color of the thorax and abdomen. A genital morphological examination is recommended for reliable differentiation .

The animals prefer dry, rocky areas with a few bushes and trees.
