Heinz Habeler (* 1933 in Wiener Neustadt ; † January 2, 2017 in Graz ) was an Austrian technician and lepidopterist .

Life

Habeler came into contact with butterflies through his father at the age of 12 . As early as 1948 he wrote scientifically usable records of butterflies. From around 1970 to 1980 he was technical department head and head of the specialist group for entomology in the Natural Science Association of Styria. He was faunistic in Thesprotia (Greece), on Krk (Croatia), in East and West Styria and in the Bad Mitterndorf-Enns region. He wrote about 70 Styria-related and another 92 publications on butterflies and a few others as a co-author. He was a correspondent for the Landesmuseum Joanneum . He received theTheodor-Körner-Prize by Federal President Franz Jonas .

Habeler's butterfly collection comprises around 56,000 specimen copies with 3,670 species. About 200 new land finds for Styria, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece are attributed to him. He was the creator of the LEPIDAT database system , in which he managed around 580,000 data from butterflies, including around 166,000 his own finds. He also managed an extensive photo archive with habitat and live images of butterflies.
