The ice hockey competitions of the III. Winter Asian Games took place from February 5th to 8th, 1996 in the port city of Harbin in the People's Republic of China . The game was played in the Baqu Arena, which was specially built for the games and has a capacity of 5,000. In addition to the host nation, the People's Republic of China , three other countries - Japan , South Korea and Kazakhstan - took part in the competition. Kazakhstan took part in the competition for the first time after its independence. It immediately secured the gold medal and remained without a tournament defeat. Behind them Japan and China won the other medals.

In addition, an ice hockey tournament for women took place for the first time. The participants were the host nation People's Republic of China , Japan and Kazakhstan . In contrast to the men, the People's Republic of China was able to win the gold medal without defeat. Here, too, silver went to Japan, while Kazakhstan took bronze.

Men's

mode

Each of the four teams played once against each other team. The team with the most points won the gold medal.

The tournament was the same as qualification for the ice hockey tournament of the 1998 Winter Olympics in the Japanese Nagano . Since Japan, as the host of the games, was automatically set for the Olympic ice hockey tournament, the three games without Japanese participation served as Group D of the regional pre-qualification. Only the winner reached the final qualification.
