Heinz Ehlers began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown with AaB Ishockey , for which he was on the ice for the first time in the top Danish league in 1981 . In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , the attacker was selected as the 188th player in the ninth round by the New York Rangers , but did not move to North America, but to the Swedish Elitserien , where he played for Leksands IF for five years , with whom he was in the 1988/89 season was runner-up. Then the Dane signed a contract with league competitor AIK Solna , for which he spent two more seasons in the Elitserien from 1989 to 1991. With the second division club Rögle BK , the striker made it into the Elitserien in the 1991/92 season, but eventually returned to his home club AaB Ishockey after a year of first class.
During the current season 1993/94 Ehlers joined the EHC Biel from the Swiss National League A , but moved to Austria at the end of the season to the EC KAC . He stayed with this for a year and a half before joining the Augsburg Panthers from the German Ice Hockey League at the beginning of the 1995/96 season, for which he was active in the top German division for two years. From 1997 to 2002 the Dane was a regular with the Berlin Capitals (and temporarily also team captain), which he then left for Aalborg, where he ended his active career in 2004 with his home club.

The striker scored 45 goals and 72 assists in a total of 61 World Cup games .
As a trainer
After the end of his career, Heinz Ehlers took over the coaching position of his last club as a player, at AaB Ishockey . In the first season as head coach, the Dane was runner-up with AaB after the team lost 2: 4 games in SønderjyskE Ishockey . After he was able to repeat this success in the following year, changed Ehlers to Switzerland, where he as coach of EHC Biel took over and this 2007/08 season in the first-class National League A resulted. After the club threatened to fail in the play-outs of the 2008/09 season , the Dane was dismissed during the ongoing relegation round, the so-called league qualification , in April 2009 and replaced by Kent Ruhnke .
From November 2009 Ehlers was behind the gang at NLB participant SC Langenthal and won the championship title in the National League B with this in 2012 . For the 2013/14 season, he accepted an offer from the NLA promoted Lausanne HC . In the 2013/14 season, the Vaudois sensationally qualified for the playoffs. In the playoff quarter-finals, the outsider was only defeated by the sovereign qualifying winner ZSC Lions in the decisive seventh game of the series with 3: 4 victories and only just missed another surprise. Also in the following season 2014/15 Ehlers LHC led into the playoffs, where they were eliminated in the first round against Bern. In 2015/16 Lausanne finished ninth in the main round and missed the playoffs when they were tied with Eighth Bern. After the season, the club announced the separation from Ehlers despite the current contract. About a month before the announcement, Lausanne's president had questioned Ehlers' gaming system in an interview.
