Marek Mazanec (born July 18, 1991 in Písek , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Mountfield HK from the Czech extra league since April 2019 .
Career
Mazanec began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at IHC Písek , where he played for the U18 team as a 14-year-old. He then moved to the youth department of HC Plzeň . In the 2007/08 season he was able to win the Czech championship in this age group as a regular goalkeeper with the U18 team. He was then ordered the following year into the U20 team of HC Plzeň, which he led to the best record in the regular season in 2010 .
Marek Mazanec made his debut for HC Plzeň in the Extraliga during the 2009/10 season when he was on the ice for a third. In the following season he came to regular appearances in the extra league and was able to achieve a catch rate of 91.1% in 15 games. At the same time, he continued to play for the U20 team, and Mazanec was loaned to his former club IHC Písek in the second division for nine games . In the 2011/12 season he completed 19 appearances in the Extraliga as the second goalkeeper behind Adam Svoboda and played at the same time for the third-class HC Klatovy . With both teams he reached the play-offs for the first time.
After Mazanec was already available in 2011 in the NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 in the sixth round at a total of 179th position by the Nashville Predators . However, he stayed in the Czech Republic and was initially used again at IHC Písek after HC Plzeň had signed Finnish goalkeeper Tuukka Rask for the duration of the NHL lockout . He then returned to the Extraliga and shared his playing time in the regular season again with Svoboda. In the play-offs he was finally able to prevail as a regular goalkeeper and played all 20 games for HC Plzeň. With a 4-3 victory in the final series, he won the Czech championship title with the team .
In May 2013, Marek Mazanec signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Nashville Predators. He then moved to North America and initially worked for their farm team , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the American Hockey League (AHL). After an injury to goalkeeper Pekka Rinne Mazanec was appointed to the Predators' NHL squad for the first time on November 5, 2013. There he made his debut three days later when he replaced Carter Hutton after eight minutes in the game against the Winnipeg Jets . During the month Mazanec was able to assert himself as a regular goalkeeper and was named NHL Rookie of the Month with a catch rate of 93.2% and two shutouts . After Rinne returned, Mazanec had to hand over the role of second goalkeeper to Carter Hutton and Juuse Saros in the following seasons . Ultimately, the Czech goalkeeper stayed in the service of the Nashville franchise until the summer of 2017 without getting beyond the role of substitute.
Mazanec returned to Europe in August 2017 when he signed a contract with HC Slovan Bratislava from the Continental Hockey League . There the Czech was only active until December of the same year, as he was signed by the New York Rangers from the NHL. The Rangers then only used him at the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL, before transferring him to the Vancouver Canucks in February 2019 in exchange for a seven-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft . There he played exclusively for the Utica Comets and then returned to his Czech homeland by joining the Mountfield HK . In June 2019, his NHL rights switched to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the trade for JT Miller .
International
Mazanec played for several ages of the Czech national junior team. In the 2007/08 season he was used for the U17 selection for the first time. He was then part of the Czech squad at the 2009 U18 World Junior Championship and two years later at the 2011 U20 World Junior Championship .
The Czech made his debut for the senior national team of his home country as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2017/18.
