At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he first played for their farm team Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League (AHL) before making his debut for Ottawa in the NHL in the 2015/16 season.

After six years in the Senators' organization, he did not get a further contract after the 2017/18 season, so he joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2018 . In the same way, he moved to the Carolina Hurricanes in September 2019 . However, they only used him in the AHL at the Charlotte Checkers before he was handed over to the New Jersey Devils for the trade deadline in February 2020 with Janne Kuokkanen and a conditional four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 .
