Anahim Lake is a municipality in the province of British Columbia in western Canada . At the Canada Census 2016 it still had 82 inhabitants, but a total of around 1500 people live in the vicinity of the place. The population has thus remained stable after having decreased by 40% in the census period from 2006 to 2011 from 140 to 83 inhabitants. Anahim Lake is located in the Cariboo Regional District on the Interior Plateau , just under 200 kilometers west of the district capital Williams Lake .

The place belongs to the Chilcotin District and is the administrative seat of the Ulkatcho First Nation , an indigenous tribe that belongs to the Dakelh and makes up about half of the population of the area. At the same time, members of the neighboring Tsilhqot'in also live here .

Every year in July, the Anahim Lake Rodeo takes place in town.

history

Anahim Lake is located on the southern shore of the lake of the same name, which was first mentioned in 1861 as Lake Anawhim by a tribal leader of the Tsilhqot'in and was first mapped a year later. The place was originally only settled by the Tsilhqot'in, but the Dakelh largely gave up their remote settlements in the area in the 1940s and 1950s in order to also move to Anahim Lake.

The Canada Post opened the first post office of the place in Anahim Lake on September 1, 1939th

The main industry of the place is now forestry . The Ulkatcho First Nation has been running a sawmill near the settlement for more than 30 years.

traffic

Anahim Lake is located on British Columbia Highway 20 , which runs from Williams Lake to Bella Coola in the west of the province. The distance to Williams Lake, with almost 320 kilometers by road, is more than twice as long as the way to Bella Coola, which is about 135 kilometers away.

Directly on the highway is the regional airport Anahim Lake , which offers flight connections to Vancouver , Victoria and Bella Coola. It is also used by some charter and private airlines.
